Harutiun Dellalian is one of the most genuine
examples of his People, even triumphing over death...
There is a supernatural power in his works...which are really harmonious,
cosmic, abstract, human...
Of fearless mentality, he was a soul of singular creativity...A perfect
fusion of buoyancy and depth...
Harutiun Dellalian can best be described as one of the most original
composers of contemporary Armenian music, whose life was anything but
traditional, even quite extraordinary. He successfully expressed what he had
to say to the world and the world heard his voice. At his first appearance
on the international stage, in Boston and Los-Angeles (in 1987) he won the
SUPER STAR PRIZE and GOLDEN AWARD of the California Cinema and Television
Board.
The road he travelled to create his works was not smooth or easy. Fate held
many obstacles in store for him and only when he was already advanced in
years did he begin to study music professionally. However, strength and the
need to express himself, compelled the artist to pursue goals which seemed
unattainable. Talent and an enormous desire to succeed and attain his
objectives favoured his encounter with a life in art, expressing through
music the ideas originating from philosophy and history which were most near
and dear to his heart. He was pressed for time, of which there was not
enough...
He was born in the Greek Capital of Athens, where he studied at an Armenian
primary school. When he was 10 he immigrated to Armenia with his family. His
infancy and youth were very difficult and he was not able to receive any
musical training. Nevertheless, he was an artist through and through.
Painting, writing poetry...
His first opportunity to attend a Professional institution, the Romanós
Melikian College of Music, arose when he was 31. Eduarde Mirzoyan was his
first teacher in music composition. 4 years later, when he was already 35,
he was admitted to the Komitas National State Conservatory, where he
continued to study with the composer Eduarde Baghdassarian. In 1979 he was
already a member of the Composers’ Union of Armenia.
His creative life was very short, only lasting for 13 years. Meanwhile,
during this very short period of his life he successfully created primary
works, which were performed on many stages throughout the world, in the
U.S.A., Japan, Italy, England, Portugal, Spain, France, Germany, Greece,
Russia... He was always able to draw the attention of the public and
specialised critics, to his art.
He has not left a great quantity of compositions. He is the author of some
25 works, (a number of which are incomplete), 3 of them symphonies, his
symphonic Poem Death, Memorial to the Martyrs Requiem Cantata, Immersed Sun
Dramatic Cantata, Ecloga Chamber concert for string orchestra and flute,
Topophono chamber concert for string orchestra, piano and French horn etc.
In the chamber music genre, special attention should be paid to his
Meditations for clarinet and piano, Sonata for piano Dedication to Komitas,
Sonata for bassoon Medium, Requiem Trionfale for organ etc.
From the first few moments of hearing Harutiun Dellalian’s music the
vehemence of his very strong personality becomes obvious. Parallels can be
made between him and composers such as John Cage, Vareze, Pendereszky. In
his symphonies, of great calibre, his orchestral mentality is clear. His
Chamber Works are especially original in their rich novelty and for the
inventive manner in which the instruments are used, delivering the most
unexpected and unusual varieties of sonority. He always felt the need to
seek, to experiment, find and produce a richer sonority for classical
instruments and enhance the very timbre of instruments to reach other
possibilities.
Harutiun Dellalian’s music is very national, which is why his human worth
goes beyond the boundaries of nations. His work is understood by peoples of
different cultures, enabling them to become aware of the culture and history
of a most ancient people.
Harutiun Dellalian transformed his difficult fate into a fountain of
transparency which inspired his work, thus ensuring his contribution to
Contemporary Armenian Music.
